John Kani

John Kani is a South African actor and theatre practitioner. He worked with Athol Fugard and Winston Ntshona on Sizwe Banzi Is Dead and The Island, and later helped establish the Market Theatre Laboratory. [1][2]
Biography
A South African government account records Kani’s birth in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, on 30 August 1943. After working with local drama groups, he joined the Serpent Players in 1965 and met Athol Fugard. Their collaboration with Winston Ntshona produced work that circulated inside and outside South Africa. [1]
Kani and Ntshona took Sizwe Banzi Is Dead and The Island to the United States in 1974. The government account records his Tony recognition in New York for acting in the productions. The National Arts Festival also credits Kani, Fugard and Ntshona as writers of the two plays. [1][2]
His later association with Johannesburg’s Market Theatre began in 1977. In 1990 Kani and Barney Simon established the Market Theatre Laboratory to train younger theatre practitioners. His work therefore includes both performance and the development of training infrastructure. [1]
